Midori by Dansko (Part Une)

I'll never forget the first time I learned about Dansko. It happened six years ago. I was at Kaiser for my annual physical. When my doctor walked in, I immediately noticed her amazing shoes. Over the years I had experienced so many disappointments with so many different brands that I eventually came to believe that style and comfort were traits that ran orthogonal to each other. I came to believe that if I wanted to wear a pair of foxy kicks, I would have to sacrifice comfort---and vice versa. Five inches in width flat on the ground, my wide flat feet chose for me: it chose Plain Jane comfort. Left with no alternatives, I wore my running shoes everywhere with almost everything.

Having to choose between style and comfort ended the very day I saw my fashion forward doctor wearing her foxy comfy Mary Jane Danskos six years ago. Since that fated day, I've purchased several pairs of Dansko from brick and mortar stores and from EBay. Needless to say, Dansko and I were love at first sight.

Can you imagine my ecstasy when I found a lovely brown box with Dansko inscribed on the side, waiting for me in my mailbox? It felt like Christmas in late May. I thank Dansko for sending me this pair to wear, test and review. And without further ado, let's get to it!

Dansko sent me a red slide from their Golden Gate line, called Midori. Midori is a lovely Mary Jane half backed clog. It features darling details such as welting that runs vertically down the toes, and hand stitching that runs all around the perimeter of the shoe. The Midori comes in several colors: Pomegranate (the lovely pair featured in this post), Black, Brown, Butterscotch, Thyme, and Teal (a great color, too!).

I first wore the Midori on a long hike without socks along the Coastal Trail in San Francisco about a week ago. As I did for the Sanita's Catalina Wave, I kept my two Sensitivity Issues in mind, the first being the open area above the strap of the Mary Jane, which becomes an issue only if the shoes aren't wide enough. The second area I keep in mind is the heel, which only applies to open back clogs with a slight heel. Neither of these issues were relevant to the Midori -- the width and lengths were perfect. However, I did experience an isolated and mild discomfort (about an inch in diameter) on the base of my LEFT large toe knuckle. Actually, the official name for this area which I speak of is: The Great Toe's Metatarsophalangeal Joint. But I prefer to call it "Toe Knuckle". This toe knuckle resides directly beneath the vamp beside the mouth of the Mary Jane. That small area in the left shoe, about an inch in diameter, rubbed against my toe knuckle as I walked. Though, the rest of my feet were quite happy and quite comfy in them. I've been wearing my Midoris daily since that first hike along the Coastal Trail and to Dansko's credit, the discomfort around my left "toe knuckle" has abated and disappeared.

Hey, for those of you who love certifications, it will please you to know that the Golden Gate line carries the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance, which designates footwear products that promote good foot health. Midori is part of the Golden Gate and is officially good for you.

If you want to check out the Midori, I suggest you visit your local comfort shoe shop and try on a pair -- they're stunning in person. As far as other brick and mortar stores are concerned, Nordstrom has them in stock. You can also get these babies online:

If any of you have Midoris, please feel free to share your impressions -- I'd love to hear what you think. Again, a million thanks to Dansko for making this review of Midori possible!

The Arcopedico Wolky Affair

Nature by Arcopedico

What a day. After about an hour photographing Nest on Fillmore (more of this in a later post), I window-shopped my way back to the car. I came across a comfort shoe store a block or two from Nest called Cross Walk. Unlike the *fashionable* shoe stores that dominate The Fillmore, Cross Walk specializes in shoes that are stylish as well as comfortable -- my kind of store! They carry two brands which I recognized immediately -- Dansko and El Naturalista. To my delight, however, they stocked brands I was unfamiliar with. Two caught my eye: Nature in Cherry by Arcopedico, a slip on ballerina type Mary Jane, pictured above; the other I saw was called Tulip in Patent Leather Red by Wolky. Yes, that's the darling pair you see below.

It took me a couple of months to save for a pair of Ous by Camper. The mere idea of visiting Camper's San Francisco store for the first time provided me enough gusto to get though the the sheer unpleasantness of programming in OpenGL this semester (I shiver at the very thought). So as I paraded around Crosswalk in the Arcopedico cherry slip ons, I had no intention of buying shoes today. After all, I was going to get a pair of Ous in a few days! At least, this was how I felt until my eyes fell on the red Wolky. I initially tried on a size 39 in black (they were out of red in 39). Since my toes stuck out a bit, Lynn gave me a pair of 40s, available in RED! So lovely... so comfy... I was hooked. Lock, stock and barrel, it was mine. It will be a while longer until I see Camper in SF. But, oh how I love my Wolky!

Sanita's Catalina Wave (Part Une)

Okay, you guys... this review is waaaay long over due! I was obsessed with the Wave this entire weekend. I had a ton of fun with my one woman photoshoot on Saturday (I was the set designer, the clothes editor, the model, the photographer, the director, the graphic designer, and now -- the blogger) . It's too bad that my homework eventually got in the way though. But even as I programmed late Saturday night, I only longed to blog about the double buckle half back Mary Jane clog... which is why I'm happy to finally have some free time, even if only for a few moments!

Have any of you ever heard of aniline leather? Well, I learned that aniline leather is leather prized for its softness. It's the type of leather that undergoes the least amount of processing. What this means is that it will develop a rich luster (or patina) over time. What this also means, though, is that it will fade with prolonged exposure to the sun.

Well, I learned that the Catalina Wave is made of aniline leather. The pair that I received had a few scratches and at first, I thought that this was a flaw, but later learned that scratches are characteristic of aniline leather -- it's not processed to conceal such blemishes. As noted by the Wikipedia, this type of leather has often been called *naked* leather since it "allows the leather to breathe better, making the leather more comfortable in both hot and cold weather". So if you see scratches on a pair, don't be alarmed -- celebrate them instead.

Okay, enough about leather. You may be curious about colors! The sample I received came in Blue. The Wave also comes in Red, Black, and Cognac. When I requested a sample, I had asked for either Blue or Red.

Alright, already, so they're cute -- yada yada -- but are they comfortable? You know, when I got the package last Tuesday, after I recorded my "Hear My Nasally Voice" shot, I gently placed my camera on my kitchen table before violently ripping the package open. I paraded around the kitchen and loved the lightness that embraced my feet. I almost felt like I was wearing my Scutes!

When I first saw the Catalina Wave on OnlineShoes.com, though I immediately fell in love with its shape, there were two areas which I noted with yellow flags, or Sensitivity Factors, as I've called them. The first area was between the straps and the arch. I've had a couple of Mary Jane disasters, at least with shoes I've bought from Payless Shoe Source. The other Sensitivity Factor was located at the heel which protrudes up by less than half an inch. Depending on the fit of the shoe, I was afraid that my heel would bang against the protrusion, potentially irritating my poor feet.

It was time to put these babies to the test -- with a nice long dog walk. So Chico and I walked about for half an hour that late afternoon and you know, the two Sensitivity Factors I mentioned earlier never surfaced. I had a great walk wearing brand new shoes -- with no socks! How cool is that!?!

I had mentioned a photoshoot earlier -- I tried on a bunch of skirts and pants last Saturday. I wanted to see how compatible the Wave would be with a variety of outfits. The Wave fit them all, ladies -- Clothes love the Wave.

Where can you get the Catalina Wave? You can get them directly from SanitaClogs.com for $135.00 or OnlineShoes.com for $134.95. The size availability ranges from Sizes 35 - 42 and fits true to size.

The Catalina Wave is highly recommended by PuglyFeet. But, if your feet are very sensitive, given the opportunity, try them on first and make sure that the Sensitivity Factors aren't an issue with your lovely feet.

Squeeeeel!

Sanita ~ Catalina Wave

You know, when I picked up the mail from our mailbox last Tuesday, I casually took the package that Cosette handed to me, assuming that Doug had ordered more Ruby books from Amazon. Cosette and I even chatted for a few minutes and it wasn't until after I had left the mail center did I check who the package was for. For me???

Sanita ~ Catalina Wave

I didn't recall ordering anything recently. When I read who the sender was, I swear, I squeeeeeled as loud as a child would with news involving some trip to Disneyland. "OH MY GAAAWWWWD!!!"

Sanita ~ Catalina Wave

A couple of dudes in front of Subways even snickered at me as my eyes bulged out of its sockets, but WHO CARES?!? I knew the package contained the samples I had requested from Sanita Clogs to review. I didn't care if I looked crazy as I bubbled with giddiness -- it was excitement well worth the occasion!

Sanita ~ Catalina Wave

Now, I just gotta complete some documentation for a school project, then I'll post my full review on the Catalina Wave!
