The French-Inspired Home

Shoes shoes shoes. That's all it's been about these past few weeks on PuglyFeet, and so it's nice to change the pace a bit and write about something else like my favorite book of late -- The French-Inspired Home by Kaari Meng. As some of you already know, I love anything vintage. This book is packed with pages and pages of "noteworthy notions" and my heart leapt with joy as I savored each page.

I'll share my knowledge of vintage notions, how to collect them, where to find them, and how I develop color palettes for decorating. I'll lead you through the French-inspired home, room by room.

In Living Color ~ Lagoon

Chocolat (the movie starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp) made quite an impression on me. I think I must've seen the movie over 30 times. Everything about it was memorable -- from the whimsical story, to the classic attire of the townspeople, to the colors of that beautiful shop. And so, here we are, bathed in deep blue of Behr's Lagoon. It's a pleasure to wake and rest with thoughts of that magical chocolaterie.

Doug and I are Alice in Wonderland nuts! I know it's hardly visible from the glare, but the print above the red chair is Alice debating the integrity of the elixer in the bottle labeled 'Drink Me'.

In Living Color ~ Firecracker

We adore Amélie. From her chic bob to her stylish clothes to her charming French apartment -- the movie left us smitten. And in her honor, we decided to paint our bathroom a reddish hue. To complement the egg yolk tile that covered the lower portion of the bathroom, we thought that a pink tone would suit it best and so we have bright and happy Firecracker -- the perfect color to begin and end a dyn-o-mite day!

Are we obvious francophiles? I've learned more than a dozen French words in two months -- all while using the toilet. This English to French shower curtain from Target is a wonder. Let me demonstrate from memory: cheese == le fromage. Oui oui -- magnifique!

In Living Color ~ Golden Cricket

Last year, I was smitten with yellow. Not just any yellow, though, but a kind of deeper yellow, something like golden mustard. For some reason, I referred to this as saffron and have wondered if the color of saffron is really golden mustard or if I called it such simply because I like the word "saffron".

Saffron... This leads me to my saffron bag. I love the Mossimo bag that I bought from Target a couple of years ago, the last one on clearance, for a mere $9.00. It sure was nine bucks well spent. To my surprise, I learned that saffron (or mustard yellow) is a versatile color and needless to say, was able to wear that lovely bag with many clothes for different occasions.

So while choosing colors for our home office, I appealed to Doug for a color similar to that Target bag. We settled on Golden Cricket (Behr #370D-6) and this was a good thing -- the office looks warm and happy, the perfect color for the room where our ideas are born, unfold, take hold and grow.
