TGIF

God, thank GAWD it's Friday. It's about 11pm on a warm Friday night in the Bay Area and I'm just chillin' in my living room, typing away on my Mac Book Pro and feeling completely satiated. What a day! I turned in the third installment to my OpenGL assignment this afternoon. I hacked away at that wretched beast for the passed week and a half, so as you can very well imagine, it's refreshing to focus on anything besides homework. Heck, I welcome distractions -- the more trivial the better! I'm finally caught up on my guiltiest pleasure of all: America's Next Top Model. And, Doug and I very much enjoyed the Dog Whisperer tonight. It felt good to finally post some Daily Mug photos from this week and a bit more pics of my Tarjay finds from over a week ago. I have 10 more hours to go including an estimated 7 hours of restful sleep and then back to programming I must go. Sleep better be goooood.

We Scarfed Down the Rejects

Red Velvet Cupcakes

When Doug and I first tasted Red Velvet Cake at Aurora's house several years ago, we instantly fell in-love it -- so much so that we immediately scoured the Internet for a good cake recipe and once we found Paula Deen's Southern Red Velvet recipe on the Food Network, we baked and baked and after a while we learned how to bake them very well. So much so that our tiny kitchen became a Red Velvet powerhouse, crunching them out all week for friends and family and especially ourselves.

I ate them all the time, preferably a la mode and consequently, I gained a whopping 16 pounds. Doug and I averaged 1.5 cakes each week! I remember wondering why my clothes stopped fitting all of a sudden. After two consecutive months of Red Velvet feasts, we finally grew tired of eating them (thank god) and haven't touched red batter since... until today.

Red Velvet Cupcakes

I baked a few dozen Red Velvet cupcakes for Fitz's birthday and as I was mixing the sugar and flour, I had almost forgotten how much fun the baking process was. But, I also became aware how unhealthy pastries are. After all, cakes, especially the nice moist ones, are simply vats of sugar and oil.

Red Velvet Cupcakes

No, my life is not devoid of sugar or baked goods. I assure you that I'm quite the sugar whore. I have coffee with my cups of sugar several times a day. I snack on Trader Joe's Chile Covered Mangoes daily and you bet I always make room for dessert.

But there is something so irresistible and so special about Red Velvet Cake. Perhaps it's all about the red dye, or perhaps it's all about the smooth cream cheese frosting...

Red Velvet Cupcakes

Despite the sinful attributes of yummy Red Velvet, as Doug and I gazed down at the four misfits that sat on a plate before us, we just couldn't help but scarf down the rejects.

Guilty Pleasure

Baume du Jardin Biologique

Yes, I did it. I bought the expensive and delicious lotion that makes me look as though I'm constantly wiping my nose clean with the back of my hand. What I'm really doing is savoring the aroma of Baume du Jardin Biologique. Made by L'OCCITANE en Provence, this tomato and olive oil cream "pour les mains" or for the hands, is absolutely yummyriffic...
