His Special Spot
It never fails. For years now, just like clockwork, each and every time we pass by this special spot on the Coastal Trail, Mojo does his rolly polly squirm. Though I find his squirms immensely amusing, it's kind of disturbing to think that he's probably doing it because some poor animal died there. Either that or he's rolling on shit... just great...
This is what Syzygys from Sciforums.com has to say about dogs rolling in carcasses or shit:
"I think dogs like to roll in other dog's shit or carcasses, because they wear that smell as camoflague. Since they are predators when they are on the walk (let's say not on their own territory), if they can pick up another dog's smell (possible the area's top dog) they can scent-camoflague themselves and get away with hunting on the forbidden land. With carcasses the camoflague works slightly differently, it is overpowering their own smell, so the prey wouldn't notice them so soon."
Hmmm. Very strange. As official as Syzygys sounds, I prefer this explanation from Dogster.com:
"my dogs do this all the time, especially sarah, and not just on dead animals either. It just has to be something putride smelling. The reason a dog rolls in the vile stuff is because to them the smell is so wonderful its almost like an aphrodisiac and they feel that they need to smell that wonderful for as long as they can."
